"I'm Not the Decision Maker" Sales Objection: What to Ask Next

Somya Shekhar Jain

When a buyer says "I'm not the decision maker," ask how the decision is made and how they are involved. Do not dismiss the contact or bypass them. They may evaluate the product, gather requirements or recommend an option even if someone else approves the purchase.

The scripts below are suggested wording, not measured conversion claims. HubSpot's objection-handling guide, checked October 2, 2026, recommends identifying the decision-maker or helping the current contact build the internal case.

Ask about the process, not the person's rank

Try: "Understood. How does a purchase like this usually get evaluated on your side?"

Then ask: "What is your role in that process?"

Those questions invite the contact to explain their involvement without turning the conversation into a test of authority. HubSpot's decision-maker questions guide warns that a blunt "Are you the decision maker?" can make a useful contact feel unimportant.

Do not assume an executive title proves authority or that a junior title means no influence. Ask about the actual process.

Find the approval criteria

Try: "What would the person approving this need to understand before considering it?"

The answer may identify budget, product fit, implementation requirements or another concern. Treat those as questions to answer, not objections to defeat. If a requirement is unsupported, state the limit rather than promising it will be handled later.

For example: "I can explain what the current product supports. If shared team administration is required, this option may not fit." This is example wording, not a claim about every buyer's needs.

Offer an introduction without bypassing the contact

Try: "Would it be useful to include them in a short conversation, or would you prefer material you can share first?"

Let the contact choose. Do not claim an introduction or meeting has been agreed before they confirm it. If they prefer written material, ask what it should cover and keep it factual.

A request to share information is not permission to contact another person through a guessed address. Relationship and recipient checks still matter outside the call.

Help with the internal case

A short internal summary can cover the problem the contact named, current product capabilities, limits, verified cost and open questions. Leave unsupported ROI numbers out.

Try: "What concerns do you expect internally? I can give you a short factual summary and mark anything that still needs checking."

Where Boxy can help during the call

Hintro's Boxy is a desktop copilot with a private overlay. A rep can invoke Ask a good question or What to say next through Boxy Controls. Documents, quick notes and Custom Vocabulary in a personal Knowledge Base inform suggestions.

Boxy supports native English, Hindi and Hinglish transcription plus Hinglish AI suggestions. One example for a mixed-language conversation is: "Samajh gaya. Aapke yahan is purchase ko evaluate kaun karta hai, aur aapka role kya rahega?" Adapt the wording to your voice and the buyer's language.

This is assistance with the conversation, not automatic stakeholder outreach. Boxy's stated after-call outputs are a summary, speaker-labeled downloadable transcript and AI Interactions log. See use cases and the FAQ for scope.

Hintro's pricing lists Lite at INR 499, Essential at INR 1,299 and Power at INR 2,599 per month. Check plan limits before passing costs to another stakeholder.

FAQ

Should I stop speaking with someone who cannot approve the purchase?

Not automatically. Learn their role and the buying process. They may be an evaluator or recommender.

Should I ask for the decision-maker's contact details immediately?

Ask whether an introduction or shared material would be useful first. Do not bypass your contact without agreement.

What should an internal summary include?

The stated problem, current capabilities, limits, verified cost and unresolved questions. Avoid invented ROI or unsupported promises.

Does Boxy contact the decision maker?

No automatic stakeholder outreach is claimed here. Boxy provides live suggestions and after-call artifacts; the rep reviews any next step.
